The Fastest Thermapen Yet: Why We Never Stop Improving

The Fastest Thermapen Yet: Why We Never Stop Improving

For more than 40 years, we've been refining one thing: helping people measure temperature with confidence.

Thermapen has become the thermometer trusted by professional chefs, food manufacturers and home cooks around the world. So when people ask why we'd redesign a product that's already recognised for its speed and accuracy, the answer is simple:

We never believe innovation is finished.

Every new Thermapen starts with one question: how can we make the user experience even better?

With Thermapen NANO, that thinking has led to our fastest reading ever, a brighter display, easier controls and thoughtful features inspired directly by customer feedback. We sat down with our Managing Director, Jason Webb, and Electronic Design Engineer, Myles Gibson, to talk about the thinking and engineering behind the newest member of the Thermapen family.

Thermapen One is already considered one of the fastest and most accurate food thermometers available. Why create another model?

Jason:

We've never believed that a product reaches a point where it can't be improved.

Technology moves on. Manufacturing techniques improve. Most importantly, we listen to how people actually use our products every day.

Whether it's a Michelin-starred kitchen where every second counts or someone cooking Sunday lunch at home, the goal is always the same: make temperature measurement faster, easier and more intuitive.

Innovation has always been part of Thermapen's DNA. We don't introduce new features for the sake of it — they have to genuinely improve the experience of using the product.

The headline feature is ThermaBoost technology, delivering readings in just 0.4 seconds. How did that come about?

Jason:

ThermaBoost is probably the biggest leap we've made in Thermapen technology for years.

The challenge wasn't simply to make it faster. We wanted to create something genuinely new — technology that would improve the product without compromising the accuracy and reliability people expect from Thermapen.

Our engineering team worked tirelessly to develop patent-pending ThermaBoost, using advances in microprocessor technology alongside our world-class thermocouple design.

When we demonstrated it to our partners at ThermoWorks, their reaction was simply, "How have you done that?"

It's the first technology of its kind, and we're incredibly proud of it.

Myles:

Getting to 0.4 seconds wasn't as simple as making the thermometer sample faster. We had to balance speed with battery life, while also redesigning the probe to improve its performance without changing the look and feel of the Thermapen people know.

That's where ThermaBoost really comes into its own.

It intelligently detects when the probe has been introduced to a new medium, whether that's food, drink or something else you're measuring, and increases the sampling rate to reach the final temperature as quickly as possible.

Once it gets there, it returns to its standard sampling rate to conserve battery life.

So rather than simply running at maximum speed all the time, ThermaBoost is constantly responding to what's happening at the probe.

That's what makes it so exciting. We've made Thermapen faster, without compromising the battery life people rely on.

And the result is a thermometer that reaches its final temperature in just 0.4 seconds; more than twice as quick as the Thermapen ONE and faster than the blink of an eye.

Speed is clearly important, but Thermapen NANO includes lots of smaller changes too.

Jason:

Those details matter just as much.

Take the magnetic back, for example. That came directly from listening to customers who wanted somewhere convenient to keep their Thermapen during cooking.

The brighter display makes readings easier to see in every environment.

Even moving the °C/°F button outside the battery compartment is a small change that makes a surprisingly big difference. Previously, you needed to open the battery cover every time you wanted to switch units. Now it's instantly accessible, so you can switch between UK and US recipes whenever you want.

Individually, they're small improvements. Together they make Thermapen NANO noticeably easier to use.

Myles:

Some of the changes we're most proud of are the ones that might seem small at first, but they're exactly the kind of improvements that make a product better every time you use it.

The new LCD was a big focus for me. We've made it much clearer and easier to read from different angles, so getting a quick, clear reading is easier than ever.

Was it important to keep everything people already loved about Thermapen?

Jason:

Absolutely.

The temperature range, waterproof construction, exceptional accuracy and durability are all fundamental to what makes a Thermapen.

If something already works brilliantly, we don't change it.

Instead, we focus on making every interaction better while preserving the qualities that have made Thermapen the thermometer professionals trust.

ETI has a reputation for precision engineering. How much work goes into achieving that level of performance?

Jason:

A huge amount.

People often focus on the speed, but speed means very little without accuracy.

We've spent decades refining our thermocouple technology, sensor design and electronics. Our instruments are trusted across industries where precision matters, from food manufacturing to pharmaceuticals and laboratories.

Some of the world's leading experts in thermometry have looked at what we've achieved and asked how we've done it.

That's something we're incredibly proud of.

Myles:

What sets us apart is the durability and reliability that comes from decades of designing, refining and listening to customers.

With Thermapen NANO, we've taken that experience and pushed the technology further, particularly with the probe and ThermaBoost.

The result is a thermometer that combines that proven reliability with an instant response from the probe.

What's the philosophy behind developing Thermapen?

Jason:

Everything starts with the user.

We're constantly asking how we can make cooking smoother, faster and more enjoyable, with absolutely perfect results.

Temperature shouldn't slow you down — it should give you confidence.

Whether you're running a professional kitchen or cooking dinner for your family, Thermapen is there to help you create something exceptional.

That's why we continue to innovate.

Finally, what makes you most proud of Thermapen NANO?

Jason:

That we didn't settle.

We could have left Thermapen exactly as it was, and it would still have been one of the best food thermometers available.

Instead, our engineers challenged themselves to build the best Thermapen we've ever made.

Thermapen NANO is the result of years of development, countless hours of engineering and an obsession with improving even the smallest details.

It's faster. It's smarter. It's easier to use.

And we're already thinking about what's next.
